Regret to say that due anti terrorism legalisation you will have to attend a branch of La Poste in France (anywhere) equipped with your passport and 2 other forms off identification (one of which must be a public utility bill) showing your UK address.
Seen Grahams reply - you do not need an appointment and they did not aske for proof of income at all.

You will have to make an appointment and attend in person in order to open any bank account in France. When making the appointment you should make sure you get details of what documents you need to bring. You will need proof of identification and proof of address, and you may also need proof of income.
Edit: I should have said you would need an appointment for any bank EXCEPT La Poste, where you can just turn up, but the point is that you should check with the specific branch you’re going to go to on what documents you will need. France is exceedingly bureaucratic, but also very decentralised, so there is no guarantee that what will work in one branch will work in another, even though theoretically they should all be the same. As you don’t live in France it would be inconvenient to say the least if they demanded some additional document which you didn’t have with you.
